FK Vardar Skopje is the most successful football club in North Macedonia and one of the country's most important sporting institutions. It was founded on 22 July 1947 in Skopje through the merger of FK Makedonija and FK Pobeda. The club has remained closely associated with the capital throughout its history, while its traditional colours are red and black, giving the team its familiar nickname, the Red-Blacks. The club's name refers to the Vardar River, the largest river in North Macedonia, which flows through Skopje.

Vardar's history includes major achievements both in Macedonian football and during its years in the Yugoslav top flight. Its first major trophy came in 1961, when the club won the Yugoslav Cup. In the final, played in Belgrade, Vardar defeated Varaždin 2–1. It was the first major nationwide success in the club's history and marked the beginning of a long association with European competitions.

The most famous period before the breakup of Yugoslavia came in the second half of the 1980s. Vardar finished the 1986/87 Yugoslav First League season in first place and consequently entered the 1987/88 European Cup. The title, however, became part of a complicated legal dispute connected with the previous season's match-fixing scandal and points deductions. After subsequent legal proceedings, the official championship was ultimately awarded to Partizan Belgrade. Vardar nevertheless represented Yugoslavia in the European Cup, and UEFA treated the Skopje side as the Yugoslav champion for the purposes of the competition.

One of the key figures of that generation was the young striker Darko Pančev, who later won the European Cup with Red Star Belgrade and the European Golden Shoe. Pančev played 207 matches for Vardar and scored 132 goals. Another important member of that generation was Ilija Najdoski, who also went on to achieve major success with Red Star.

After Macedonia gained independence, Vardar became the dominant force in domestic football. According to the club's official records and information from the Football Federation of Macedonia, the team has won 12 Macedonian league titles, with the latest coming in the 2025/26 season. The championship was secured on 15 May 2026 with a 1–0 victory away to Struga Trim-Lum.

The club has also won five Macedonian Cups, in addition to the Yugoslav Cup triumph of 1961. Separating the trophies won in Yugoslavia from those achieved after independence is important when assessing Vardar's record: the club's current tally of 12 league championships refers to titles won in independent Macedonia, while its Yugoslav-era honours form a separate part of its history.

One of Vardar's most notable European campaigns came in 2003/04. The Macedonian club eliminated CSKA Moscow in the second qualifying round of the Champions League before facing Sparta Prague in the third round. Sparta won the first leg 3–2 in Skopje, but Vardar fought back to a 2–2 draw in Prague and remained within one goal of a historic qualification. Sparta eventually prevailed 5–4 on aggregate.

An even more memorable European run came in 2017. In the Champions League qualifiers, Vardar eliminated Malmö FF and then beat FC Copenhagen 1–0 at home in the third qualifying round, although a 4–1 defeat in Denmark ended that Champions League campaign. In the Europa League play-offs, Vardar faced Fenerbahçe. The Skopje side won the first leg 2–0 and followed it with a 2–1 victory in Istanbul, qualifying for the Europa League group stage for the first time in its history.

In Group L, Vardar faced Zenit Saint Petersburg, Real Sociedad and Rosenborg. The Macedonian side finished fourth with one point from six matches, but ended the campaign with a 1–1 home draw against Rosenborg. The qualification itself remained a landmark achievement for the club and for Macedonian club football.

Vardar's home ground is the National Arena Todor Proeski in Skopje, formerly known as Gradski Stadion and later as the National Arena Philip II of Macedonia. The stadium underwent major redevelopment and reopened in 2009. It is also the principal home of the North Macedonia national team and has hosted major international fixtures, including the 2017 UEFA Super Cup.

Among the most important figures in Vardar's history, Darko Pančev occupies a special place as a player who began his senior career at the club and later became one of the most prominent Macedonian footballers. Ilija Najdoski and several generations of domestic champions also played an important role in establishing Vardar's status as the country's leading club. The 12th championship in 2026 further strengthened that position and added another chapter to the long history of the red-and-black side from Skopje.
