Few Romanian clubs are as closely connected with the academic identity of their city as Universitatea Cluj. The club's origins date back to 1919, when the sporting organisation of the Romanian student society “Petru Maior” moved to Cluj together with the organisation itself. From its earliest years, the club was closely associated with the university community, while its traditional black-and-white colours became one of the defining elements of its identity.

The most important chapter in the history of Universitatea Cluj is its relationship with the Romanian Cup. The club reached the final of the competition's first edition in 1934 and has appeared in the decisive match six times in total. Its only triumph came in 1965. In the final at Stadionul Republicii in Bucharest, the team then known as Știința Cluj defeated Dinamo Pitești 2–1. Remus Câmpeanu and Zoltan Ivansuc scored the goals, while the winning side also included players such as Mihai Adam and Simion Moguț.

The 1965 triumph gave Universitatea Cluj its first opportunity to compete in European football. In the 1965/66 European Cup Winners' Cup, the Romanian side defeated Austria's Wiener Neustädter twice in the first round, winning 1–0 away and 2–0 at home. The next round brought a much stronger opponent in Atlético Madrid. The Spanish club won both matches, 2–0 in Cluj and 4–0 in Madrid.

The club's second European campaign came in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup. Universitatea Cluj made an impressive start by beating Levski Sofia 4–1, but the Bulgarian side overturned the deficit in the return leg, winning 5–1 after extra time. The club later also appeared in the 1995 Intertoto Cup, although it finished last in its group.

Domestically, Universitatea Cluj has never accumulated a trophy haul comparable with Romania's most successful clubs. Its importance instead rests on its long tradition, its connection with Cluj and its historic links with the academic community. Among the most prominent figures in the club's history are Mihai Adam, Remus Câmpeanu and Mircea Luca. The latter became one of the defining symbols of the club and has been commemorated near the stadium.

Today, Universitatea Cluj plays its home matches at Cluj Arena, located near the site of the historic “Ion Moina” stadium. The club returned to European competition after more than five decades away by qualifying for the UEFA Conference League in 2025. It was an important milestone for a team whose previous European appearance had come in the 1972/73 season.

The story of Universitatea Cluj is therefore primarily one of tradition, local identity and a strong connection with university life. A single Romanian Cup triumph does not fully reflect the club's historical importance: it played in the first Romanian Cup final in 1934 and has reached the competition's final six times. Its return to European football after 53 years also demonstrated that the black-and-white tradition remains an important part of the modern club.
