Borussia Dortmund was born out of an act of rebellion. On the evening of 19 December 1909, a group of young footballers from the youth section of the Catholic Trinity parish met at the inn "Zum Wildschütz" to found their own club, weary of the strict oversight and constant criticism of the chaplain responsible for their welfare, Father Hubert Dewald. Upon learning of the meeting, the priest tried to force his way in and break it up, but was physically kept out. His intervention prompted more than twenty of those present to withdraw, leaving only 18 "true Borussians" to found the club. Its name was taken from the nearby Borussia brewery, with the Latin word "Borussia" simply meaning "Prussia."

The team, which initially played in blue-and-white striped shirts with a red sash, has worn its characteristic yellow-and-black colours since 1913. The club's greatest period of success came in the 1990s and early 2000s: under Ottmar Hitzfeld, Borussia won two German league titles and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 1997 after defeating Juventus in the final. In 2002, a side managed by Matthias Sammer secured another Bundesliga title. A further golden era was created by Jürgen Klopp, who led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a German Cup between 2010 and 2012, as well as the UEFA Champions League final in 2013. In total, the club's honours include eight German championships, five German Cups, and the 1966 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

Over the decades, the club has been home to outstanding players including Matthias Sammer, Michael Zorc, Andreas Möller, Karl-Heinz Riedle, Marco Reus, and Robert Lewandowski, while its modern identity has also been shaped by talented young players developed or promoted in Dortmund, such as Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, and Ousmane Dembélé.

Since 1974, the team has played its home matches at Signal Iduna Park, one of the world's most famous football stadiums, with a capacity of over 81,000 spectators. The legendary Südtribüne, known as the "Yellow Wall" (Gelbe Wand), embodies the unique atmosphere created by BVB's supporters. The club's philosophy rests on developing young talent, attacking football, and a strong bond between Borussia and the local community of the Ruhr region.
