Kuopion Palloseura, known worldwide as KuPS, spent decades as a provincial underdog before emerging, in the second decade of the twenty-first century, as the dominant force in Finnish football. Founded on 16 March 1923 at the Kuopion Seurahuone building, the club spent its earliest years playing only friendly matches against local sides. Its colours — originally black and green — changed in 1935 to the yellow and black still worn today, known as Keltamusta; at the same time the club's abbreviation shifted from KPS to KuPS.
KuPS first reached the Finnish top flight in 1947, but the club's true golden era ran from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. During this period the side from Kuopio won five Finnish championships (1956, 1958, 1966, 1974, 1976) and finished runner-up on eight further occasions. The club's first Finnish Cup followed in 1968, with the second not arriving until more than two decades later, in 1989.
The 1990s brought serious financial and sporting trouble, and KuPS even dropped to the third tier. The club has played in the top division continuously since 2008, and the real breakthrough came in 2019, when, under coach Jani Honkavaara, KuPS ended a 43-year wait for a title by claiming its sixth championship. Further Finnish Cup wins followed in 2021 and 2022, before 2024 brought something unprecedented in the club's century-long history: its first-ever double, winning both the league and the national cup in the same season. A year later, in 2025, KuPS defended its league title to claim an eighth championship overall, though it finished runner-up in that year's Finnish Cup final.
Despite the modest continental reputation of Finnish football, KuPS has produced a few memorable European nights. Chief among them is the 1990–91 European Cup Winners' Cup, when the Kuopio side hosted Soviet powerhouse Dynamo Kyiv and held them to a 2–2 draw, before a heavier defeat in the away leg ended the tie. A genuinely historic milestone arrived only in the 2025–26 season, when KuPS became the first club in its history to reach the UEFA Conference League league phase — and then, remarkably, the first Finnish club ever to progress from that league phase into the knockout play-offs.
KuPS play their home matches at the Kuopio Football Stadium, widely known by its commercial name Väre Areena, which holds around 5,000 spectators. The club remains a source of pride for the Savo region and one of the most consistent sides in the Veikkausliiga, regularly promoting graduates of its own academy into the first team.
