Manchester City FC took one of the most winding roads in English football history before becoming a global giant. The club was founded in 1880 as the parish team St. Mark's (West Gorton), established by Reverend Arthur Connell to steer young people in east Manchester away from gang violence and alcoholism. In 1887, after relocating to new grounds, the side renamed itself Ardwick Association FC, and it was only following a financial reorganisation on 16 April 1894 that the club finally became Manchester City Football Club, adopting its now-signature sky blue shirts at the same time. The club's first true star was Welshman Billy Meredith, who joined in 1894 and helped win the club's first trophy, the FA Cup, in 1904, with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.

For most of the 20th century, the club lived in the shadow of local rival Manchester United, though it had its own moments of glory — between 1968 and 1970, under the management duo of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, City won the league title, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. The real revolution, however, did not arrive until 2008, when the club was taken over by investors from the United Arab Emirates linked to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This financial boost, combined with a clever transfer strategy and the construction of state-of-the-art infrastructure like the City Football Academy, turned the team from a Premier League mid-table side into an absolute giant of world football.

The pivotal moment in the club's modern history was the 2016 hiring of manager Pep Guardiola, who instilled a unique, spectacular style of play based on dominance and possession. Under his guidance, Manchester City dominated English football, winning a record four consecutive Premier League titles between 2020/21 and 2023/24 — a feat no other club in the history of English top-flight football had ever achieved. The ultimate milestone for the entire organisation proved to be the 2022/23 season, in which the club secured a historic continental treble, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and their highly anticipated, first-ever Champions League trophy. After ten years at the helm, Guardiola left the club in May 2026, and following a runner-up finish in the 2025/26 Premier League, he was succeeded by Enzo Maresca — a former Guardiola assistant from the 2022/23 treble-winning campaign, returning to the Etihad after spells at Leicester City and Chelsea.

Today's Manchester City is not just a football club, but a global brand heading the City Football Group consortium, which owns teams across several continents. Home matches at the modern Etihad Stadium draw crowds of fans from all over the world, and the club's sky-blue jerseys are worn by some of the biggest stars in modern football. For years, though, City's success has run in parallel with an ongoing legal dispute with the Premier League, which in February 2023 charged the club with 115 breaches of its financial rules; despite hearings concluding at the end of 2024, the case, as of September 2026, remains without a published verdict.
