FC Barcelona, representing the capital of Catalonia, is a brand that extends far beyond the boundaries of mere athletic competition, perfectly embodied by its famous motto: "More than a club" (Més que un club). Founded on 29 November 1899 by the Swiss businessman Joan Gamper, over the decades it has become a symbol of Catalan national identity and a synonym for footballing elegance, spectacular success, and a unique philosophy of play built on dominant possession of the ball.

The club plays in its distinctive blue and maroon colours, known as blaugrana. Its first president was the Englishman Walter Wild, though Gamper himself — who served as club president five times between 1908 and 1925 — is regarded as its spiritual founder, the man who saved Barça from bankruptcy in its first decade. Since 1957 the club has played at Camp Nou, which, after years of extensive redevelopment under the Espai Barça project, returned to hosting league matches in 2026.

The brightest chapters in the club's history were written thanks to two fundamental figures who defined its modern identity. Johan Cruyff—first as a player, later as a brilliant manager—instilled the philosophy of "Total Football" at Barcelona and laid the foundations for the development of the famous La Masia academy; it was under his guidance that the club won its first-ever European Cup, in 1992. It was this very crucible of talent that produced the generation which, under Pep Guardiola, won a full sweep of six trophies in the 2008–09 season, creating arguably the greatest team in the history of football. The geniuses of this era included midfielders like Xavi and Andrés Iniesta, while the absolute symbol of the period became Leo Messi—the Argentine king of football, who shattered almost every possible goalscoring record and claimed dozens of trophies with the club.

Following years of monumental success, as well as severe financial and organisational turbulence in the early 2020s, the Blaugrana entered a phase of major rebuilding and renewed identity. Under the leadership of president Joan Laporta, the club proved it could successfully merge its immense tradition with modernity. The heart of this new project became a blend of highly experienced, world-class leaders—led by the brilliant Polish striker Robert Lewandowski—and another incredible wave of La Masia graduates, spearheaded by the footballing prodigy Lamine Yamal. FC Barcelona continuously proves that its magnetism and ambitions remain unaltered, with each consecutive generation of players tasked with writing a history filled with magic and beautiful play.

Mission Catalonia: Lewandowski transformed the fate of FC Barcelona

Transferring Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2022 brought plenty of emotions and tough negotiations. Despite an active contract in Bavaria, the Polish striker publicly declared his desire to take on a new challenge, initiating a weeks-long boardroom battle. Key roles in sealing this transaction of the decade were played by agent Pini Zahavi and Blaugrana president Joan Laporta. Despite massive financial struggles, the Catalan club activated its famous financial levers and paid approximately 40 to 50 million euros to bring the prolific goalscorer to the Camp Nou.

The arrival of the Pole was precisely what a weakened Barcelona, reeling from an organizational slump following the painful departure of Lionel Messi, needed. Lewandowski immediately assumed the goalscoring burden and became the undisputed leader of the new team built by Xavi. In his debut season alone, he claimed the La Liga top scorer crown with 23 goals, leading Pride of Catalonia to their first Spanish league title in four years, along with a Supercopa victory.

The Polish striker's influence extended far beyond match statistics. In a dressing room filled with exceptionally talented yet inexperienced youngsters from La Masia, he naturally stepped into the role of a mentor and a model of professionalism. Young players gained confidence alongside the seasoned champion, adopting his work ethic, training standards, and meticulous approach to recovery and nutrition.

Signing a striker of his caliber also provided a massive image and business boost for the entire organization. The transfer showed the football world that regardless of temporary economic turmoil, Barcelona remains a magnet for the elite. Lewandowski's legacy in the Catalan capital is not just about trophies and dozens of goals, but above all, restoring the club's former glory and stability during one of the most challenging periods in its modern history.
