Lech Poznań finally got off the mark in the UEFA Europa League, coming from a goal down to draw 1–1 with Sunderland AFC at the Enea Stadion in front of around 40,000 fans, and earning the Polish champions their first point after two 0–4 defeats.

The evening began in the worst possible way for the hosts. Sunderland had already shot from distance in the 1st minute through Nordi Mukiele, and just seconds later Mateusz Lis played an inaccurate pass to Michał Gurgul. Nilson Angulo intercepted it and crossed at once, and Tymur Tutierov headed in from close range to make it 0–1 in the 2nd minute. The home crowd, who had filled the stadium and were backed by a large, flag-waving contingent of Sunderland supporters in the away sector, responded with louder support, but Lech’s defence remained fragile in transition and the visitors threatened on the break several times before half-time.

After the interval Lech coach Niels Frederiksen changed things in the 62nd minute, bringing on Leo Bengtsson and Luis Palma, and the hosts grew into the game. Bengtsson missed a good chance from a cross a few metres from goal in the 65th minute, but made no mistake five minutes later: after a corner was cleared too short, he took the ball in the centre of the box, and Patrik Wålemark found him, and he finished low at the near post to level the score at 1–1 and send the stadium into raptures. Lis then denied Enzo Le Fée to preserve the point.

Sunderland coach Régis Le Bris praised the atmosphere in Poznań as superb, and Frederiksen said the fans created a fantastic backdrop, adding that after two defeats a point was a positive result. Sunderland dropped their first points of the league phase but remain unbeaten, while Lech next travel to Benfica on 5 November.
