Lech Poznań - Bayer Leverkusen, 15 Oct 2026
Two penalties from Patrik Schick and a ruthless first half were enough for Bayer Leverkusen to beat Lech Poznań 4–0 in the second round of the UEFA Europa League league phase, handing the Polish champions their second heavy defeat in the competition in as many matches. Lech had also lost 0–4 to Crystal Palace on matchday one.
The game turned in the 15th minute, when Lech goalkeeper Wojciech Mońka had to be replaced through injury and Terry Yegbe came on in an emergency. Three minutes later, Leverkusen also lost an attacker to injury, with Martin Terrier making way for Schick. It proved a costly change for Lech. In the 29th minute Yegbe handled the ball in the box, and after a VAR check by Serbian referee Milan Milanović, Schick calmly sent goalkeeper Mateusz Lis the wrong way from the penalty spot. Yegbe, who had already been the villain in the loss to Palace, was again at the centre of the visitors’ opening goal.
Three minutes later Bayer doubled their lead. Malik Tillman punished hesitation in the Poznań defence, involving Aleksander Gurgul, Lis and Mateusz Skrzypczak, who failed to clear the ball heading towards goal. Lech tried to regroup and Antoni Kozubal tested the goalkeeper from distance, but in the 41st minute Skrzypczak fouled an opponent in the box, was booked, and after another VAR review Schick converted his second penalty, once again sending Lis the wrong way. Lech went into the break 0–3 down.
The second half was far calmer. Leverkusen controlled possession and the tempo, while Lech improved their attacking play only in spells, with Mikael Ishak shooting from outside the box straight at goalkeeper Mark Flekken and Lis keeping the score down with several saves. Afonso Moreira missed a good chance to add a fifth in the 85th minute when he tried to lob Lis one-on-one, but in the 89th minute Ibrahim Maza finished off a flowing team move to complete the 4–0 win, and the only real noise inside the stadium came from the travelling German fans.
It is Lech’s fifth consecutive Europa League defeat, counting their campaign in 2020, and in those five matches they have scored just one goal. The result also ended a run of six straight home wins in which the Polish side scored 19 goals.
