Aston Villa FC is one of the most historic clubs in English football. Founded on November 21, 1874, by members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel in Birmingham, the club quickly established itself as a major force in the game, winning six of its seven league titles before the First World War. Villa's trophy cabinet boasts seven English league titles and seven FA Cups in total. The pinnacle of their European success came in 1982, when they lifted the European Cup, defeating Bayern Munich 1-0 in the final in Rotterdam with a goal from Peter Withe. This victory made Aston Villa the fourth English club to win the trophy, and the same year the club added the European Super Cup, beating FC Barcelona.

That triumph, however, was followed by decades without major domestic or European silverware — the last trophy before 2026 remained the 1996 Football League Cup. That thirty-year wait finally ended on 20 May 2026, when Unai Emery's side won the UEFA Europa League, thrashing German club SC Freiburg 3-0 in the final in Istanbul thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers. It was only the second major European triumph in the club's history, and, fittingly, the opponent was once again a German side, echoing the 1982 final.

Villa Park, the club's home since 1897, is a landmark stadium in the English Midlands and currently welcomes around 42,000 fans on a matchday. The club's traditional colours are claret shirts with sky blue sleeves, a combination that has become one of the most recognisable designs in English football, and the team's badge features a rampant lion. Throughout its history, Aston Villa has been a pioneering club, contributing to the development of the modern game. Key figures include George Ramsay, who managed the club for around 40 years around the turn of the twentieth century and won six league titles and six FA Cups, while the 1982 European triumph was delivered under Ron Saunders and, after his departure shortly before the final, his successor Tony Barton.

The club's rich history also includes a long tradition in English football's top flight, while Villa were founding members of both the Football League in 1888 and the Premier League in 1992, one of only three clubs to have helped establish both competitions. Aston Villa's legacy is not just in the silverware, but in its enduring place within the fabric of English and European football — a place the 2026 triumph in Istanbul reminded fans across the world of once again.
