FC Pyunik Yerevan is the most decorated club in the history of independent Armenia, founded by Khoren Hovhannisyan, widely regarded as the best Armenian footballer of the 20th century. The club was established in 1992 as Homenetmen Yerevan and won the title in the very first season of the independent league, sharing it - due to an equal points tally - with FC Shirak Gyumri. Hovhannisyan himself served as both player and coach at the time, scoring 17 goals in 27 matches.

The turning point came in 1995, when political changes forced the Homenetmen organisation to change its name - the club adopted the name Pyunik, meaning "Phoenix", the mythical bird reborn from its own ashes. The symbolism proved prophetic: in the 1995-96 season, the side, once again led by Hovhannisyan, went through the entire campaign unbeaten, setting a record run of 59 matches without defeat. A year later, Pyunik became the first club from independent Armenia to win a match in European competition, beating Finland's HJK Helsinki 3-1.

After being briefly dissolved in the late 1990s, Pyunik was reborn in 2001, taking over the league spot of lower-division champions FC Armenicum. What followed was the most dominant era in the history of Armenian football: between 2001 and 2010 the club won the national championship ten times in a row, and in 2002 it became the first Armenian club ever to advance to the second round of Champions League qualifying, eliminating Finnish champions Tampere United 6-0 on aggregate.

In total, Pyunik has won 16 Armenian championships, 8 Armenian Cups and 10 Armenian Super Cups, making it the outright leader in the country's all-time standings. Known to supporters as Nrnagoynner ("Pomegranate Colours") for its red-and-white kit, a nod to a fruit of great symbolic importance in Armenian culture, the team plays its home matches at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Yerevan. The club regularly represents Armenia in European competitions and runs one of the country's most respected youth academies, consistently supplying talent to the national team.
