Tottenham Hotspur FC was born out of the initiative of local schoolboys who, in 1882, as members of the Hotspur Cricket Club looking for something to do during the winter months, formed a football team led by Robert Buckle. The club was initially named simply Hotspur FC, but to avoid confusion with another club of the same name, it soon adopted the full name Tottenham Hotspur. In 1901, the club became the only non-League side to win the FA Cup since the Football League's formation in 1888 — a record that remains unbroken to this day. The club crest, depicting a cockerel standing on a football, and its Latin motto “Audere est Facere” (“To Dare Is to Do”), still symbolise ambitions that reach beyond England.

Tottenham's golden era began with Bill Nicholson, appointed manager in 1958. Under his leadership, in the 1960/61 season, Spurs became the first club of the 20th century to win the domestic Double — the league and FA Cup in the same season. A year later they retained the FA Cup, and in 1963, after beating Atlético Madrid 5–1 in the final in Rotterdam, they became the first British club to win a European trophy — the European Cup Winners' Cup. Tottenham's goals that night came from Jimmy Greaves (twice), John White and Terry Dyson (twice), while captain Danny Blanchflower, despite carrying an injury, personally decided he would play in the historic match.

The club's honours include two league titles, eight FA Cups and four League Cups, while on the European stage Spurs became the first-ever winners of the UEFA Cup in 1972, thanks to players such as Martin Chivers, Pat Jennings and Steve Perryman, repeating that success in 1984. Later decades were shaped by players and coaches such as Glenn Hoddle, whose elegant style of play became permanently woven into the club's attacking identity.

Tottenham's modern ambition is embodied by the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, opened in 2019 and one of the most technologically advanced football venues in Europe. In May 2025, under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs beat Manchester United 1–0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao, ending a 17-year wait for any trophy and a 41-year drought in European competition — a triumph in which captain Son Heung-min lifted the cup. While Tottenham have not dominated English football as consistently as some rivals, it is precisely their European history and long-standing attacking identity that have made Spurs one of London's most recognisable clubs.
