Manchester United FC traces its roots to Newton Heath LYR, a team formed in 1878 by workers from the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway at Newton Heath. Initially funded by the railway company itself, the side played its first officially recorded match — a 6-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers' reserves in November 1880 — already wearing green and gold, the colours of their railway employer, which earned them the nickname "the Railwaymen." The club was renamed Manchester United in 1902, after local businessman John Henry Davies rescued it from financial collapse, and moved to Old Trafford in 1910, where it has played ever since.

The darkest chapter in the club's history is the Munich air disaster of 6 February 1958, in which 23 people died, including eight players from the young "Busby Babes" team built by Sir Matt Busby. The squad was returning from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade. A decade later, in 1968, United won the European Cup for the first time, becoming the first English club to lift the trophy.

A second great era arrived under Sir Alex Ferguson, who managed the club from 1986 to 2013 and turned it into the dominant force in English football, culminating in the historic treble of 1999 — league, FA Cup and Champions League in a single season — and a third European title in 2008. Old Trafford, known as the Theatre of Dreams, remains a symbol of that period, and over his 27-year tenure Ferguson alone delivered 13 of the club's 20 league titles. For decades Manchester United stood alone atop England's all-time championship table, until Liverpool matched that tally by winning their own 20th title in 2025 — the two clubs now share the record.

The years since Ferguson's departure have been marked by a search for a new sporting identity, with frequent changes in the manager's seat. Following the unsuccessful spell of Erik ten Hag, the club appointed Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim in November 2024, though he too parted ways with Old Trafford in January 2026, with former club midfielder and England international Michael Carrick taking interim charge of the team. Despite the recent difficulty in building sporting stability, Manchester United remains one of the most recognisable brands in world football, and Old Trafford still draws crowds of more than 74,000 for every home match.
