El Clásico: the rivalry that stops the world

When Real Madrid and FC Barcelona take to the pitch, hundreds of millions of people around the world sit down in front of their televisions. The rivalry is over a hundred years old and has never been just about football. It links sport with politics, identity, and the history of Spain, which is why it is one of the greatest phenomena in world sport.

A balance sheet more even than ever

The first match was played in 1902. Barcelona won 3:1 in the semi-final of the Copa de la Coronación, with the winning goals scored by Udo Steinberg and club founder Joan Gamper. Since then, the two teams have met 264 times in official matches, and the record is remarkably even: 106 wins for each side and 52 draws. It's worth noting that different sources give slightly different figures (some put Madrid's wins at 107), since the statistics depend on which competitions are counted as official.

The records of this fixture are spectacular. The biggest goal difference was 11:1 for Real in the Copa del Rey in 1943, while Barcelona's highest margin of victory was 7:2 seven years later. The 1943 result remains the only case in which either team has scored a double-digit number of goals against the other. The all-time top scorer in Clásico history is Lionel Messi with 26 goals, while Sergio Busquets holds the record for most appearances (48).

Trophies: Madrid the king of Europe, Barcelona the king of the cup

Real is the most decorated club in Europe. Its trophy cabinet holds 15 Champions League titles (six of them in the old European Cup format), 36 Spanish league titles, 20 Copa del Rey trophies, and 13 Spanish Super Cups. It has also won the Champions League nine times since 1998, showing how effectively the club has renewed its dominance.

Barcelona counters with arguments of its own. It has 29 league titles, 32 Copa del Rey trophies, and five Champions League titles. The Catalans are also the only club to have won the league, the domestic cup, and the Champions League in the same season — and they've done it twice, in 2009 and 2015. In total, Real has 106 trophies and Barcelona 104, so the gap in this category is minimal as well.

Golden eras and their faces

Real's dominance in Europe began in the 1950s. The club won the first five editions of the European Cup, with Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás as the symbols of that era. A second wave arrived in the 21st century, when Cristiano Ronaldo led the team to four titles in five years (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), while Zinedine Zidane won three consecutive European Cups as coach. The Portuguese forward is Real's all-time top scorer in European competitions, with 113 goals.

Barcelona built its legend on style. Pep Guardiola's team, featuring Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, and Lionel Messi between 2008 and 2011, is regarded as one of the greatest sides in the history of football. Messi stands above everyone else: he scored 474 goals in La Liga and 120 in the Champions League, an all-time record. Ronaldo has 105. The duel between these two players between 2009 and 2018 drew in viewers who otherwise had no interest in Spanish football.

A global phenomenon

The power of Clásico comes from contrast. Madrid symbolized the capital and central authority, Barcelona Catalan separatism, and the slogan "Més que un club" ("more than a club") captures this better than any analysis could. Under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, the match became an outlet for suppressed emotions, and that historical weight has not disappeared to this day.

Then there are the numbers. In the 2025/26 season, 78,107 fans attended the Real–Barcelona match at the Bernabéu, while broadcasts are watched by millions of viewers worldwide. Both clubs rank among the most recognizable sports brands, and their social media accounts are followed by over a billion people combined.

Crises: even giants stumble

The history of both clubs also includes periods of weakness. After its first run of five European triumphs, Real went through "mixed fortunes" until the late 1990s. Following its 1966 European Cup win, fans had to wait 32 years for the next one — it wasn't until 1998, after a victory over Juventus, that the club reclaimed the European crown. The start of the 21st century was also difficult, as the "Galácticos" (Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo Nazário, Beckham) fell short in key matches.

Barcelona went through a deeper crisis more recently. After Messi's departure in 2021, the club found itself on the brink of financial collapse, saddled with enormous debt and unable to register new players under La Liga's salary cap rules. On the pitch, this translated into group-stage exits from the Champions League. The 2:8 defeat to Bayern Munich in 2020 also remains a symbol of that decline.

Recent years have brought a recovery. Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona regained its domestic dominance: in the 2024/25 season it won its 28th league title, and in 2025/26 it defended the championship, sealing it with a 2:0 win over Real with three matchdays to spare. Young Lamine Yamal, named La Liga's best player, and Raphinha have played a key role. Real, meanwhile, relies on the trio of Kylian Mbappé (who became top scorer with 25 goals), Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham, though in the last two league seasons it has had to concede superiority to the Catalans.
