The club was born modestly in 1959 as Llansantffraid FC, representing the tiny border village of Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, with a population of around a thousand. Over its first decades the team worked its way up the Welsh football pyramid, winning the regional Montgomeryshire Amateur Football League seven times before earning promotion to the country's top division in the 1992-93 season.

The real turning point came in 1996, when the local side signed a pioneering sponsorship deal with a computer company from neighbouring Oswestry, Total Network Solutions, adopting the name Total Network Solutions Llansantffraid. A year later the club went a step further, completely surrendering its traditional name and becoming known across Europe as Total Network Solutions FC - the first club in the British Isles to be named solely after its sponsor. The move brought the club a massive financial and sporting boost: TNS became the first side from Llansantffraid to qualify for European competition, and in later years faced opponents including Manchester City (a match played at the 72,000-capacity Millennium Stadium in Cardiff) and, in the 2005-06 UEFA Champions League qualifiers, holders Liverpool, losing the tie 6-0 on aggregate, though the home side's young goalkeeper, Gerard Doherty, drew praise even from Liverpool's manager.

In 2003 the club merged with English side Oswestry Town, which made TNS the only fully professional club in the Welsh league system. The situation became complicated in 2006, however, when Total Network Solutions was acquired by telecommunications giant British Telecom, bringing the sponsorship agreement to an end. Since the acronym TNS, already deeply rooted in the minds of fans and UEFA, had become a valuable brand in its own right, club officials settled on the name The New Saints - a reference to the patron saints of both merged towns, Saint Ffraid and Saint Oswald.

From the standpoint of sports history and statistics, all these transformations describe one and the same legal entity: both UEFA and the Welsh federation treat The New Saints as the direct successor to Llansantffraid and Total Network Solutions, crediting all trophies won to a single club's record. Thanks to this, today's fans can proudly point to the statistics, where 17 league titles (as of the 2024-25 season) make The New Saints the most decorated club in the history of Welsh football. The team plays its home matches at Park Hall in Oswestry, despite officially representing a country on the other side of the border.
