The history of Heart of Midlothian FC is inseparable from the development of football in Edinburgh. The club's formation is traditionally dated to 1874, when members of the Heart of Mid-Lothian Quadrille Assembly adopted the Football Association rules. The exact date of formation was not recorded, but 1874 is the accepted foundation year. The club soon became established in the capital and was among the founding members of the Scottish Football League in 1890. Its traditional identity is reflected in the maroon colours and the nickname Hearts, while the supporters are commonly known as Jambos.

Hearts' first Scottish league championship came in the 1894/95 season, followed by another title in 1896/97. The club then had to wait more than six decades for its next championship, eventually winning the First Division in 1957/58 and 1959/60. Hearts therefore have four Scottish league titles, with the 1957/58 triumph particularly notable for a defensive record of only 29 goals conceded in 34 matches.

The club's history is also strongly associated with the Scottish Cup. Hearts won the competition for the first time in 1890/91, and have subsequently added further triumphs, including victories in 1895/96, 1900/01, 1905/06, 1955/56, 1997/98, 2005/06 and 2011/12. The 1998 final was especially significant, as Jim Jefferies' team defeated Rangers 2–1 at Celtic Park to end a 42-year wait for the trophy. Fourteen years later, Hearts produced another landmark performance by beating city rivals Hibernian 5–1 in the 2012 final at Hampden Park.

The 1950s produced one of the strongest teams in the club's history. Players such as Alfie Conn, Dave Mackay, John Cumming and Gordon Marshall formed part of a side that won two league championships, three League Cups and the 1956 Scottish Cup. The period also marked Hearts' first participation in European competition. In September 1958, Ian Crawford scored the club's first goal in Europe against Standard Liège in the European Cup.

European competition has produced several memorable moments since then. Hearts' most successful run came in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup, when the Edinburgh club reached the quarter-finals after winning five of its eight matches. The campaign ended against Bayern Munich: Hearts won the first leg 1–0 at Tynecastle through Iain Ferguson, but Bayern won the return match 2–0. Hearts' European record has since included appearances in the UEFA Cup, Europa League and Conference League, with the club continuing to represent Scotland in continental competition.

A distinctive part of Hearts' history is the connection between the club and its supporters. The team has played at Tynecastle Park since the late 19th century, making the ground one of the defining football venues in Edinburgh. The stadium has witnessed many of the club's most important matches, from early Scottish Cup ties to European nights and major Edinburgh derbies. The rivalry with Hibernian is one of Scottish football's most established local rivalries, with the two clubs meeting regularly since the 19th century.

Hearts' history has also been shaped by figures whose influence extended beyond individual matches. Tom Purdie, one of the club's founder-members and its first captain, played an important role during the formative years and later helped guide Hearts to its first two league championships. In the modern era, Jim Jefferies is closely associated with the 1998 Scottish Cup triumph, while the 2012 team managed by Paulo Sergio produced one of the most memorable results in the history of the Edinburgh Derby.

With four Scottish championships, eight Scottish Cups and four League Cups, Heart of Midlothian FC belongs among the most successful clubs in Scottish football outside the traditional Glasgow giants. Its long presence at Tynecastle, maroon colours, strong supporter culture and historic rivalry with Hibernian have given Hearts an identity that remains closely connected with Edinburgh and with the wider history of Scottish football.
