FC Famalicão is still waiting for its first match in European competition, and in 2026 it came closer than ever. Fifth place in the 2025/26 Primeira Liga would have led to Conference League qualifying only if Sporting won the Taça de Portugal. Instead, the second-division side Torreense beat Sporting 2–1 after extra time in the final, took the cup winners' place in the Europa League, and left Famalicão without a European place. The club has never played in a UEFA competition, and the 2025/26 season, with 56 points, its best league total, remains the nearest it has come.

The club was founded on 21 August 1931 by six friends in Vila Nova de Famalicão, an industrial town in the Minho region and the district of Braga that grew around the textile industry. Its colours are blue and white, which gave rise to the nicknames Azuis e Brancos and Fama. Famalicão won the regional first division in 1954/55 and 1961/62. A first national breakthrough was the 1945/46 Taça de Portugal, where it reached the semi-finals, a stage it would not reach again for almost three quarters of a century.

The club has played in the top flight in several separate periods: in 1946/47, in 1978/79, and for four consecutive seasons from 1990 to 1994. In those four seasons it finished 15th, 14th, 14th and 17th, and it went down in 1994. After that it spent 25 years outside the top flight. The return came in 2019 under the ownership of Quantum Pacific Group of Idan Ofer, who also holds a stake in Atlético de Madrid.

The first season back, 2019/20, was the best in the club's history. Under João Pedro Sousa Famalicão finished sixth with 54 points and reached the Taça de Portugal semi-finals, with Fábio Martins among its leading players. The race for a European place was lost on the final day. In the following seasons the club stayed in the top half of the table, finishing ninth in 2020/21, eighth in 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24, and seventh in 2024/25, and it reached a second cup semi-final in 2022/23. Famalicão has become known for developing young players and selling them on: Francisco Moura moved to FC Porto in the summer of 2024, and the club also relied on players such as Gustavo Sá and Gil Dias. The coaches of the period included Armando Evangelista and, in 2025/26, Hugo Oliveira.

The 2025/26 season confirmed the progress. Famalicão opened with a 3–0 win over Santa Clara, and finished fifth with 56 points, only three behind Braga, with 15 wins and 8 defeats in 34 matches and 29 goals conceded, the fourth-best defensive record in the league. It broke the previous club record of 54 points from 2019/20. The following season began with a 1–0 home win over Rio Ave.

The club plays at the Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho, its home since 1952. With about 5,000 seats it is one of the smallest grounds in the Primeira Liga, and its stands close to the pitch have long made visits uncomfortable for the country's bigger clubs. A town of textile factories, a ground of this size and a squad built on young talent have given Famalicão a clear identity, and the one thing missing from its record is a night in Europe.
