Piast Gliwice is one of the most stable and well-organised clubs on Silesia's footballing map, tracing its roots to 18 June 1945, when a group of repatriates from Lviv founded a sports organisation at a venue on Zwycięstwa Street in Gliwice, officially registered a day later as Klub Sportowy Piast. Interestingly, the venue where the club still plays today has a considerably older history — before the Second World War it was used by the German side Vorwärts-Rasensport Gleiwitz, a multiple Silesian champion that even finished fourth in the German championship in the 1935–36 season.

For decades after the war, Piast operated mainly in the lower divisions, though in the 1970s it was among the leading second-tier sides, its greatest achievement of that era being two Polish Cup final appearances, in 1978 and 1983. The breakthrough finally came on 24 May 2008, when the club won promotion to the Ekstraklasa for the first time in its history. That promotion forced significant organisational changes, including the club's transformation into a joint-stock company with the city of Gliwice as majority shareholder, along with the construction of a new stadium on Okrzei Street, opened in November 2011.

The 2012–13 season brought a fourth-place league finish and the club's first-ever European competition appearance, and in 2015–16 Piast won the Polish runner-up title. The absolute pinnacle of achievement for the Blue-and-Reds, however, remains the 2018–19 season, when a team led by manager Waldemar Fornalik won its first-ever Polish championship — under exceptionally dramatic circumstances. After thirty rounds of the regular season, Piast trailed leaders Lechia Gdańsk and Legia Warszawa by as many as seven points, yet went unbeaten throughout the championship round, defeating Legia 1–0 away, among other results. Gliwice ultimately triumphed with a four-point lead over runners-up Legia, earning the club the right to display a symbolic white star above its crest. The following season confirmed the success was no fluke — Piast finished the 2019–20 campaign in second place, and a year later took third.

Piast play in their distinctive blue-and-red colours, and their home matches are held at the Piotr Wieczorek Municipal Stadium, which holds just under 10,000 spectators.
