Odra Opole are a club whose history includes the first post-war sports club founded in Poland, a legendary future Poland national team coach at the start of his career, and one of the most fondly remembered episodes of Polish football in European competition — a two-legged tie against German side Magdeburg that the club revisited half a century later at the opening of its new stadium. The club was founded on 16 June 1945, when a founding meeting of the Opole Sports Club Odra was held at the town hall, on the initiative of lawyer Leonard Olejnik, who became its first chairman and coined the club's name. At the time, Odra was a multi-section organisation, encompassing not only football but also athletics, tennis, boxing, ice hockey and volleyball, with its first organised sporting event a road race held in July 1945.

After mergers with local clubs, including Chrobry Groszowice in 1948, the team competed for a decade under the name Budowlani Opole before making its top-flight debut in March 1953, losing 1-2 at home to Gwardia Warszawa, with the hosts' goal scored by Augustyn Poćwa. The club's golden era spanned the 1960s and 1970s — in 1964 Odra achieved the highest league finish in its history, third place, and two years earlier had also won bronze in the Polish Cup. A truly exceptional chapter, however, was written in 1977, when the Blue-and-Reds, then newly promoted to the top flight, sensationally won the Polish League Cup under coach Antoni Piechniczek, beating national runners-up Widzew Łódź in the final. The trophy opened the door to the UEFA Cup, where in autumn 1977 Odra faced the renowned 1. FC Magdeburg, then East German runners-up and 1974 Cup Winners' Cup champions. Played in front of roughly twenty thousand spectators in Opole, the first leg ended in a 1-2 defeat, while the return leg in Magdeburg finished 1-1, sending the Germans through — the only UEFA Cup appearance in Odra's history, still remembered in Opole as the club's most prestigious European episode. Although Piechniczek won no other trophy with the club, it was here that the future coach of the Poland national team at the 1982 World Cup began his managerial career. Odra last played in the top division in the 1980/81 season, having spent a total of twenty-two seasons at that level.

In 2009, mounting debts led to the club's licence being revoked and to bankruptcy, but that same year Odra was reactivated and had to begin climbing back up from the fourth tier. After years of steady rebuilding, the club has competed continuously in the First League since 2017, and in the 2023/24 season, under coach Adam Nocioń, finished sixth in the table, securing a place in the Ekstraklasa promotion play-offs, where it was eliminated in the semi-final by Arka Gdynia. After ninety-four years at the stadium on Oleska Street, the club moved in March 2025 to the newly built Itaka Arena, holding 11,600 spectators, and fittingly opened the new ground with a friendly against 1. FC Magdeburg, the only opponent Odra has ever faced in European competition — the match ended 1-1.
