SSC Napoli - Spartak Moscow: head to head and statistics

Spartak Moscow - SSC Napoli, 7 Nov 1990

It was supposed to be another major milestone in SSC Napoli's quest for continental dominance, but it turned into one of the most bittersweet chapters in the club's history. In November 1990, the Neapolitans faced Spartak Moscow in the second round of the European Cup. The two-legged tie proved to be a grueling and calculated tactical battle—both the first leg in Italy and the return match on the freezing Moscow pitch ended in tense 0-0 stalemates.

With over 210 minutes of football unable to produce a single goal, the spot in the quarterfinals had to be decided by a dramatic penalty shootout. Diego Maradona, who was surrounded by heavy controversy at the time (arriving in Moscow on a private jet a day later than his teammates), came on as a substitute and stepped up during the shootout. The legendary Argentine calmly converted his penalty, but his teammates could not match his precision. Spartak's players showed nerves of steel, executing a flawless shootout. Napoli's defeat signaled their elimination and, as history would soon reveal, marked Maradona's final dance on the European stage for the Italian club.
