Sutjeska Nikšić is one of the most important clubs in the history of Montenegrin football. Its position has been built not only on a successful record since Montenegro became independent, but also on a long presence at the highest level of Yugoslav football. The club traces its origins to 1920, when Obilić was established in Nikšić. The team changed its name several times before becoming Sutjeska in 1945, a name connected with the Battle of the Sutjeska River during the Second World War. In 1964, the club made its debut in the Yugoslav First League. It was one of only two Montenegrin clubs, alongside Budućnost Podgorica, to compete in the top division of SFR Yugoslavia.

The Yugoslav history of Sutjeska did not bring a national championship, but the club spent several periods in the top flight and established itself as one of Montenegro's strongest sides. Its best finish in the Yugoslav First League came in 1984/85, when it finished ninth. During the 1970s, the club also competed in the Balkan Cup. Another important part of its tradition has been youth development and the production of players who later moved to other Yugoslav clubs and represented national teams.

The club's greatest period of domestic success came after Montenegro became independent. Sutjeska won its first Montenegrin championship in 2012/13 and successfully defended the title the following season, becoming the first club in the history of the Montenegrin top flight to win consecutive championships. Further titles followed in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2021/22. In 2025/26, the club won the championship again, taking its total to six league titles and establishing itself as the second most successful club in the history of the competition behind Budućnost.

The domestic honours are completed by two Montenegrin Cups. Sutjeska won the competition in 2016/17 and 2022/23. The second triumph was particularly dramatic: the final against Arsenal Tivat ended 1–1 after extra time, with Sutjeska eventually winning the penalty shoot-out 4–3.

Sutjeska's European history began well before its modern domestic successes. The club made its first official appearance in international competition in 1973, when it entered the Balkan Cup. Since Montenegro gained independence, Sutjeska has regularly appeared in UEFA qualifying rounds. The club made its Champions League debut in 2013 and has also competed repeatedly in the Europa League and Conference League qualifying rounds.

Nikšić itself is central to the identity of Sutjeska, as is the club's home at Kraj Bistrice. The stadium has hosted both domestic fixtures and European matches and remains one of the important football venues in Montenegro. The rivalry with Budućnost Podgorica is one of the country's most significant domestic fixtures. Sutjeska traditionally plays in blue and white and is known by the nickname “Plavi”, meaning “The Blues”.

Goalkeepers have a particularly strong place in the club's history. Sutjeska's official history highlights its renowned goalkeeping school, which produced Zoran Lemajić, Zoran Banović, Vukašin Poleksić, Ivan Janjušević and Vladan Giljen, among others. Giljen became one of the most recognizable players of the modern club and is listed by UEFA as Sutjeska's record appearance holder in its competitions.

The history of Sutjeska Nikšić therefore combines a tradition dating back to the early years of football in Nikšić with the status of one of modern Montenegro's most successful clubs. Six national championships, two domestic cups and regular participation in European qualifying rounds make it one of the pillars of Montenegrin club football. Its importance, however, goes beyond its trophy cabinet: Sutjeska remains one of the clubs most closely associated with the footballing tradition of Nikšić and the surrounding region.
