Valletta FC is one of the defining clubs in the history of Maltese football, with its story closely connected to the country's capital. The modern club was established in 1943 through the merger of Valletta St Paul's and Valletta Prestons. It also inherited the tradition of Valletta United, who had won the Maltese championship twice before the Second World War. For that reason, the club recognises Valletta United's titles from 1914/15 and 1931/32 as part of its own historical record. On this basis, Valletta FC officially counts 25 Maltese league championships.

The club enjoyed immediate success after its formation. In the 1943/44 season, when regular league football had not yet resumed after the war, Valletta won the Malta Cup, defeating Floriana FC 2–1 in the final. Over the following four seasons, the club won the Maltese championship three times, in 1944/45, 1945/46 and 1947/48. A more difficult period followed, but Valletta returned to the top of the domestic game in the late 1950s, winning the championship again in 1958/59.

The 1970s, 1990s and first decade of the 21st century were particularly important periods in the club's history. Valletta continued to win championships across successive generations, while the period from 1996 to 2001 was among the most dominant in its history. In 2000/01, the club won the league and the FA Trophy, alongside several other domestic honours. Valletta's official record now includes 25 Maltese league titles, 15 FA Trophy victories and a record 13 Maltese Super Cups. The club's most recent league championship came in the 2018/19 season.

One of the defining features of Valletta's history is its longevity in European competition. The club first entered the European Cup in the 1963/64 season and has represented Malta regularly in continental competitions ever since. According to the Malta Football Association, Valletta are the only Maltese club to have played more than 100 matches in European competitions and the only Maltese side to have progressed to the next round on eight occasions.

One of the club's memorable early European performances came against HJK Helsinki in the first round of the European Cup in 1974/75. Valletta won the home leg 1–0, recording one of the most significant European victories in the club's early history. In the 21st century, Valletta produced an even more emphatic result. In the first qualifying round of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League, the club defeated Andorran champions FC Lusitans 8–0 at home before winning the return leg 1–0. The 9–0 aggregate score remains the biggest victory by a Maltese club in European competition.

A particularly important figure in the European and domestic history of Valletta FC is Gilbert Agius. The long-serving captain and product of the club's youth system made 623 official appearances for Valletta and scored 244 goals, club records in both categories. Over more than two decades, he became one of the most recognisable figures in Maltese football and one of the defining players in the modern history of the capital club.

Valletta traditionally play in white and red, although the club is particularly associated with its white shirts and the nickname Lilywhites. Another long-standing nickname is Citizens, reflecting the club's connection with the capital's population. Home matches in major competitions are played at the National Stadium in Ta' Qali, Malta's principal football stadium and the home venue of the national team.

The club's history has also included difficult periods. In the 2024/25 season, Valletta won the Challenge League, the second tier of Maltese football, and returned to the Premier League. The return to the top flight was followed by another major cup success. In May 2026, Valletta defeated Gżira United 2–1 in the FA Trophy final to claim the competition for a 15th time. The victory underlined the club's enduring position in Maltese football and secured another opportunity to represent the country in European qualifying competition. With its long tradition, 25 officially recognised league championships, extensive domestic trophy record and one of the strongest European records among Maltese clubs, Valletta FC remains one of the central institutions of Maltese football.
