FC Augsburg was founded on 8 August 1907 as Fußball-Klub Alemannia Augsburg. For most of its more than century-long history, the club operated in the shadow of German football, changing its name several times and going through a difficult period at the turn of the 21st century, when financial troubles saw it drop as low as the fourth division. The club took its current form in 1969, when it merged with the city's other major side, TSV Schwaben Augsburg, giving rise to FC Augsburg.
The real turning point in the club's history came on 8 May 2011, when a winning goal from Stephan Hain in the 85th minute against FSV Frankfurt secured Augsburg's promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time. Since then, the club has remained in the top flight without interruption, an achievement in itself given its considerably smaller financial resources compared with Germany's leading clubs.
The most memorable season in the club's history came in 2015-16, when Augsburg finished a record fifth in the Bundesliga table, securing the club's historic first appearance in European competition. In the Europa League group stage, the team recorded a decisive win in Belgrade to advance to the knockout rounds, where they met Liverpool FC in the round of 32 and were eliminated by a single goal on aggregate (0-1).
As the largest football club in the Swabia region, Augsburg represents Bavaria on the German football map alongside the far wealthier Bayern Munich, against whom it contests the Bavarian derby. The team, nicknamed Fuggerstädter after Augsburg's famous banking dynasty, the Fugger family, plays its home matches at the WWK Arena, its home ground since 2009.
