RC Strasbourg Alsace traces its origins to 1906, when the club was established under the name FC Neudorf, in a region that at the time belonged to the German Empire. After the return of Alsace to France following the First World War, the club took the name Racing Club de Strasbourg in 1919 — a dual heritage that still shapes the club's distinct regional identity within French football today.

The club's greatest domestic triumph came in 1979, when Strasbourg won its only French league championship. It remains one of just six clubs in French football history to have won all three major domestic trophies: the league title, the Coupe de France — lifted in 1951, 1966 and 2001 — and the Coupe de la Ligue, won in 1997, 2005 and 2019, the last of which secured Strasbourg's most recent European qualification. On the continental stage, the club's finest run came in the 1978–79 European Cup, when the newly crowned French champions reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by a dominant Ajax side.

Strasbourg's history has not been without dramatic setbacks: in 2011, the club was relegated to the fifth tier of French football following a court-ordered financial liquidation. What followed was a remarkable rebuild under president Marc Keller, with the club climbing back through the divisions to return to Ligue 1 in 2017. Since June 2023, Strasbourg has been owned by BlueCo, the investment consortium that also controls Chelsea FC in England, marking the club's entry into a multi-club ownership model and fuelling renewed ambition, including a run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Conference League in the 2025–26 season.

Known to their supporters as Les Bleu et Blanc, the team plays its home matches at the Stade de la Meinau, used by the club since 1914 and famed for the close proximity of its stands to the pitch, which generates one of the most intense atmospheres in French football.
