Swansea City, founded in 1912 as Swansea Town, have experienced some of English football's most extreme swings of fortune. Under manager John Toshack the club rose from the Fourth Division to the First Division in just four seasons in the early 1980s, and in 1981-82 briefly topped the table before finishing sixth, still the club's highest-ever league position. The collapse that followed was just as dramatic: within a decade Swansea had fallen back to the bottom tier, and in 2003 the club avoided relegation out of the Football League altogether only by beating Hull City on the final day of the season, a match still remembered by supporters as the club's Great Escape.

Recovery came gradually, built around a possession-based style of play introduced under managers including Roberto Martinez and, from 2010, Brendan Rodgers, whose team won promotion to the Premier League in 2011, becoming the first Welsh club to play in the competition. Two years later, under Rodgers' successor Michael Laudrup, Swansea won the first major trophy in their history, beating Bradford City 5-0 in the 2013 League Cup final at Wembley, still the largest winning margin in the competition's history. The victory brought Swansea's only European campaign to date, a run in the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League that included a home win over Valencia.

Swansea spent six seasons in the Premier League before relegation in 2018, and have played in the Championship since, with an FA Cup semi-final appearance in 2023 among their more recent highlights. Nicknamed the Swans, the club moved in 2005 from its long-time home at the Vetch Field to a new stadium shared with regional rugby side the Ospreys, known for most of its history as the Liberty Stadium and now carrying the name Swansea.com Stadium. Despite competing entirely within the English football pyramid, Swansea remain the standard-bearers for Welsh club football at national level, a status their fans trace back through both the euphoria of 1981 and the near-disaster of 2003.
